Paul Rudolph and the Lower Manhattan Expressway

Lower Manhattan Expressway

In conjunction with The Drawing Center’s exhibition of Paul Rudolph’s design for the Lower Manhattan Expressway on view through November 20th and hosted by The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, this panel examined the tenor of the times which led The Ford Foundation to commission Rudolph to react to Robert Moses’ cleave across the city.

Alex Garvin, Donald H. Elliott, and Ed Rawlings explored Rudolph’s complex drawings and reflected on the socio-political climate that fueled what might have been the largest intervention into Manhattan in a generation. Following their introductions, panelists and guests debated the plausibility of Rudolph’s eccentric proposal, the power of architectural drawings to effect reality, and the viability of megastructures in the modern day metropolis.

Videos of this conversation may be made available in the near future.
