Profile Bio:

Roy Strickland is an architectural and urban designer whose practice, teaching, and research have engaged the global cities of London, Paris, Tokyo, Istanbul, and New York. He was appointed the Director of the Master of Urban Design Program at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the program’s inception in 2001. He is former Director of the Urban Design Program at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and was Chair of the S.M.Arch.S. Curriculum Committee while he was a member of the faculty of the School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Strickland specializes in housing, public space, and community design. As founder and Director of the New American School Design Project at MIT and the University of Michigan, he has developed the City of Learning [COL] design and planning strategy that has been applied to schools and school systems across the United States. COL embraces educators' research that healthy neighborhoods support successful learning and makes school design and programming holistic by integrating the planning of schools with that of communities. By doing so, it identifies schools as a potent new force in urban revitalization as it expands preK-12 educational options. Over the past decade, COL has shaped the planning and delivery of more than $1-billion in school and community development projects nationwide. Mr. Strickland's other design work includes public space projects at Union Square and Bryant Park in midtown New York; housing and community development along Frederick Douglas Boulevard and in the Bradhurst neighborhood, both in upper Manhattan; and school-related projects in New York and New Jersey. This work has been featured in Progressive Architecture, Architectural Record, and The New York Times and has been exhibited at MIT, Columbia University, the Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Washington (Seattle), and UCLA. Mr. Strickland is author and editor of Designing a City of Learning: Paterson, NJ, winner of the 2002 EDRA/Places Award for outstanding planning projects. He is also author of numerous articles in professional and academic journals concerning school and community design, housing, and urbanism. He is former Associate Editor of the Harvard Architecture Review and currently serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Places: Forum of Environmental Design. He received his B.A. from Columbia and his M.Arch. from MIT.
